The Victron Energy Orion XS 12/12-50A is a compact, high-efficiency DC-to-DC battery charger designed to charge a 12V auxiliary or service battery from a vehicle’s 12V starter battery and alternator. Delivering up to 50A of adjustable charging current, it provides fast, controlled charging while helping prevent excessive load on the alternator and vehicle wiring.

Designed for modern touring, commercial and mobile-power systems, the Orion XS is suitable for vehicles fitted with either conventional or smart alternators. It regulates the alternator supply into a stable, configurable charging profile so the auxiliary battery can be charged correctly while the engine is running.

Built-in Bluetooth allows the charger to be configured, monitored and updated through the free VictronConnect app. VE.Direct connectivity also allows the Orion XS to integrate with compatible Victron GX monitoring equipment.

Controlled Alternator Charging

Connecting an auxiliary battery directly to a starter battery may result in uncontrolled current flow, poor charging performance or compatibility problems with modern smart alternators.

The Orion XS provides a controlled charging path between the starter and auxiliary batteries. It converts the available alternator voltage into a regulated charging profile and limits the current to the configured maximum.

This helps:

  • Protect the alternator from excessive continuous load
  • Prevent overloading of the installation cables
  • Improve auxiliary battery charging
  • Compensate for voltage drop in the wiring
  • Support correct charging of lithium and lead-acid batteries
  • Provide more predictable charging performance

Adjustable Charging Current

The output current can be configured from 1A up to 50A through VictronConnect. This allows the charger to be matched to the alternator capacity, auxiliary battery, cable size and intended application.

For example, the current may be reduced when:

  • The vehicle has a smaller alternator
  • Other electrical equipment operates while driving
  • The auxiliary battery has a lower permitted charge current
  • The installed cable cannot safely support the full 50A
  • Reduced alternator load is preferred

The maximum setting should only be used when the complete installation is correctly designed for the required input and output current.

Smart Alternator Compatibility

Modern vehicles often use variable-voltage or smart alternators that reduce their output once the starter battery has recovered. This can make conventional voltage-sensitive charging methods unreliable.

The Orion XS uses configurable engine-running detection to identify when charging should begin and stop. The detection parameters can be adjusted through VictronConnect to suit different vehicle and alternator behaviours.

A remote on/off or ignition signal can also be used when required by the vehicle or installation design.

Adaptive Multi-Stage Charging

In charger mode, the Orion XS applies a controlled multi-stage charging process suitable for the selected battery type. The charging sequence may include:

  • Bulk: Supplies the primary charging current to restore battery capacity.
  • Absorption: Maintains a controlled voltage while the charging current gradually reduces.
  • Float: Maintains the fully charged battery at a lower voltage.
  • Storage: Reduces long-term maintenance voltage when appropriate.

Charging voltages and other parameters can be configured for compatible lead-acid and lithium battery systems.

Lithium and Lead-Acid Compatibility

When correctly configured, the Orion XS can charge compatible:

  • Flooded lead-acid batteries
  • AGM batteries
  • Gel batteries
  • Calcium batteries
  • Lithium iron phosphate batteries with a suitable BMS

Battery requirements vary between manufacturers. Always confirm the permitted charge voltage, maximum charging current, temperature limitations and BMS requirements before configuration.

For lithium installations, the battery BMS must provide appropriate protection. The charger does not replace the battery’s internal or external BMS.

Built-In Bluetooth and VictronConnect

Bluetooth connectivity allows the charger to be accessed from a compatible smartphone or tablet through the free VictronConnect app.

Users can:

  • Monitor input and output voltage
  • View charging current and operating status
  • Select the appropriate battery profile
  • Adjust the maximum charging current
  • Configure charging voltages
  • Set engine-running detection parameters
  • Review warnings and operating information
  • Select charger or power-supply mode
  • Perform supported firmware updates

Because Bluetooth is built in, no separate VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle is required for normal wireless configuration.

VE.Direct Connectivity

The VE.Direct port allows the Orion XS to communicate with compatible Victron GX devices, such as the Cerbo GX or Cerbo-S GX.

When connected using the appropriate VE.Direct cable, supported charger information may be included in the GX system overview and uploaded to the Victron Remote Management portal when the GX device has internet access.

The VE.Direct cable and GX device are sold separately unless specifically included.

High-Efficiency Design

The Orion XS uses efficient power-conversion technology to reduce energy loss and unwanted heat. Its compact electronic design can achieve efficiency of up to approximately 98.5%, depending on operating conditions.

The charger may still become warm during high-current operation. It must be installed with adequate ventilation and should not be enclosed in a small unventilated compartment.

Power-Supply Mode

In addition to battery-charging operation, the Orion XS can be configured as a stable DC power supply. In this mode, the unit provides a user-defined output voltage rather than following a multi-stage battery-charging profile.

Power-supply mode may be useful for operating compatible DC equipment that requires a stable, regulated supply. It must be configured correctly for the connected load.

Remote On/Off

The remote on/off connection allows the charger to be controlled by a compatible external signal, switch, ignition circuit or battery-management arrangement.

This feature can help ensure the charger only operates when required and may simplify integration into custom vehicle electrical systems.

Installation Information

Install the charger close enough to the batteries to minimise voltage drop while maintaining adequate ventilation and safe cable routing.

Both the input and output circuits must use:

  • Correctly sized cables
  • Suitable cable lugs or terminals
  • Appropriately rated fuses
  • Secure battery and chassis connections
  • Suitable isolation where required

The negative connections are internally common because this is a non-isolated charger. Confirm that a common-negative configuration is appropriate for the vehicle and battery system.

Fuses should be installed close to the relevant battery positive terminals. Cable size and fuse ratings must be selected according to the maximum current, cable length, installation method and applicable standards.

Please Note

The Orion XS 12/12-50A is intended for 12V-to-12V systems. It is not suitable for charging a 24V battery from a 12V supply or directly converting a 24V system to 12V.

The full 50A output requires correctly sized cables, fuses, terminations and an alternator capable of supporting the additional load. The charger’s input current may be higher than its output current under some operating conditions because input voltage, output voltage and conversion losses differ.

Installation by a qualified automotive electrician is recommended, particularly in modern vehicles with battery-management systems, smart alternators or sensitive electronic equipment.
